Responsible small-scale mining & transparent supply chains

Our training program in Liberia on responsible small-scale mining and transparent supply chains, using Coltan concentrate as an example, is progressing well. Yesterday, Hamza conducted a session with our Liberian colleague Harrison and purchase officer Karam, focusing on IoT devices designed to monitor the quality and quantity of Coltan concentrate.
These devices, currently in the prototype phase (built by Fondazione Bruno Kessler – FBK), are undergoing rigorous testing to ensure they can endure the challenges of tropical climates and environments. Key innovations include a compact digital scale equipped with tokens and trackers. These tools empower artisanal miners by ensuring fair treatment and accurate payment based on the quality and quantity of their deliveries to central traders. Importantly, they provide miners with a transparent view of their products and allow them to access all relevant details whenever needed.
Tracking devices further enhance transparency by tracing the material’s journey from the trader to the refinery. To safeguard supply chain data, blockchain technology, facilitated by Minespider, ensures secure and tamper-proof storage, fostering trust and accountability at every step.
